Way to serve your country, major.

Major Stefan Fredrick Cook, of the US Army Reserve, is taking his millitary pledge to a new level–defending his country from terrorists, extremists, and elected presidents. His claim, which is apparently not the first of its kind, is that Obama was not born in the US and is therefore not eligible to lead the country and command its millitary. He’s therefore taken the issue to the US District Court in an attempt to obtain a temporary restraining order, preventing him from being deployed to Afghanistan–which, in fact, was supposed to happen effective tomorrow. There was at least one previous claim asserting that issue, dating before Obama received the nomination for US president from the democratic party. That claim didn’t actually end up getting anywhere, as evidenced by the fact Obama is–much to the disappointment of detractors like Cook–the currently serving US president, in spite of that. One therefore has to wonder, since this path was repeatedly taken and repeatedly didn’t lead anywhere, what the soldier’s motives actually are. Is it an opposition to the war? Does he just want to make the news? Whatever the reason, this can’t be good for his millitary career. I see a court martial in your future, Major Cook.

Update 7/15/2009: He got out of it, too. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you an Afghanistan opponent’s favourite excuse. As of now.
